We’re talking about form again this week! Why? Because good form helps you maximize results and avoid injury. Let’s work on our crunches.

Crunch Form

Doing crunches is good practice for more than just building washboard abs. Maintaining core strength is beneficial for your posture, it allows you to move around freely, and helps you lift your own body weight. Crunches are a popular exercise many use to build core strength, but how do you know if you’re doing them right?

If you’ve ever had a sore neck after a few sets of crunches, you’re likely getting your form wrong. When done properly, crunches don’t put undue stress on your neck. Form is important because it helps you avoid injury — and no one has time for a neck injury! Also, lifting your weight with your neck won’t give you the benefits in your core you want.

When doing crunches, consider the following:

  • Maintain space between your chin and chest. Visualize holding a tennis ball there.
  • Look up, not forward. Shifting your focus onto the ceiling will help you keep your chin lifted.
  • Exhale when you curl up, inhale when you release down. Exhaling deeply from the belly will help you tighten those abdominal muscles — allowing you to lift from the abs, not the neck.

The Myth of the “Bikini Body”

Happy 4th of July to those who celebrate U.S Independence Day. Here in Michigan, this holiday weekend is a popular time to hit the water. Lake houses, canoe trips, beach days; it’s a long weekend off for most during the summer, and we’re going to enjoy it.

Inevitably, every spring I see and hear a lot of messaging coming from the fitness community about preparing your “bikini body.” Femmes of all ages reiterate this messaging to each other as we agonize over getting our bodies ready to wear our new bathing suit purchases. Here’s the thing though, this elusive “bikini body” is really just a myth.

Diet culture refers to our society’s habit of valuing shape and weight over health and wellness. And, diet culture impacts everyone. The trap of diet culture is that it is designed to sell products. High self esteem and positive body image prevents people from buying weight-loss products and fitness packages. Diet culture messaging, therefore, affects everyone — even super models struggle with eating disorders and drug addiction to keep their bodies “perfect.”

That’s just the thing y’all, “perfect” is a subjective designation. To be human is to represent the great diversity of shapes, sizes, and colors that makes us human. If human beings truthfully felt attracted to only one body shape, people with that body shape would be the only ones attracting mates. Considering mothers give birth every day to more people who represent the diversity of physical attributes we see in the world, we can safely assume what human’s find physically attractive is a little more complicated than what diet culture wants us to think.

My point is, every body is a bikini body. If you want to wear a bikini, the way your body looks doesn’t have to stop you. You have the power to decide what makes you beautiful. I did a quick Google search through blog posts and magazine articles for this post. All with titles such as “8 Most Attractive Qualities in a Mate,” or “Qualities People Find Most Attractive.” The common denominator? The top bullet points on all of these lists contain personality traits such as: confidence, vulnerability, a sense of humor, etc.

So, this summer when you’re hitting the water remember: wear whatever makes you comfortable. The less we agonize over the way we look, the more our personality has the opportunity to shine. And that’s what makes you beautiful.

Thursday July 15, 2021 we will have another evening workout + happy hour. Join us on Facebook at 7:00 pm for a cardio workout, with a cocktail hour immediately to follow via Zoom call. 21+ only.

Team Cardio Outside

For our July outdoor workout, we would like to take the Team on a hike! Saturday July 24, 2021 meet us and the Team on a local trail (location tbd)! We’ll spend the morning on some light cardio and Team bonding. Hope to see you there!
