Fighting the Slump: How to stay motivated when you really don’t want to work out

Many people struggle with the motivation to engage in fitness consistently. However, meeting your fitness goals is often a matter of patience and longevity. See this week’s trainers tips for 5 ways to stay motivated to work out.

Lack of motivation is the biggest nemesis to your fitness journey. Living a holistically fit lifestyle usually necessitates creating new habits, and making them last. Consistency is key, and consistency takes motivation. But how to stay motivated?

5 Ways to Stay Motivated to Work Out

Make it fun

Let’s be honest with ourselves, we all work way too hard. And at times when we don’t have to work, why would we want to? Therefore, if your workout feels like work, motivating yourself to do it will be tough. Make your workout fun, and you’ll be more likely to do it. Inviting friends to work out with you helps.

For example, I was never able to get into fitness until I started working out with Vinnie. You may have noticed during some of the LIVE virtual workouts that we have a lot of fun together. Listen to music that makes you want to dance and sing. Make it competitive – if you’re into that kind of thing. Have some fun with your fitness!

Consider holistic wellness

You need energy to workout. If you’re not eating, sleeping, or hydrating enough, you probably shouldn’t even be working out. And your body will tell you so. If you’ve ever tried a hard workout on a night of poor sleep, you know what I mean. At TDBFit we consider fitness beyond the number on the scale; fitness is wellness. Give your body the sleep and fuel it needs and motivating yourself to workout will become much easier.

Know your “why”

Why are you working out? What are your motives? What purpose does working out serve in your life?

Too often people answer those questions by describing things they don’t like about their bodies. Diet culture convinces us to workout in order to punish our bodies for the ways they deviate from societal beauty standards. Approaching fitness with such a negative mindset doesn’t make it very appealing to engage in. Punishing your body for what you see as its deficiencies isn’t fun. Spending time on making your body stronger and healthier, however, feels completely different.

Take some time to think deeply about why you want to work out. What kinds of things do you tell yourself when you work out? How do you measure your success? The more positive your feelings about your body and working out in general, the easier it will become to motivate yourself.

Find the right workout for you

The type of workout you do should complement the way you learn. I’m a visual learner. Therefore, I need Vinnie to break down each exercise and show it to me in order for me to understand how to do it. That’s his coaching style, and that’s why it works for me. On the other hand, Vinnie can hear someone describe the exercise, jump right in, and figure it out himself. That’s because he’s an auditory and tactile learner: he learns by hearing and doing. If you feel like you need to workout with a group — you may be an interpersonal learner.

If you are having a difficult time motivating yourself to work out, you likely aren’t doing the right workouts for your brain. Learn more about your brain and your learning style, and find the right workout program for you.

Be kind to yourself

Engaging in negative self talk will kill your motivation every single time. That little voice of self doubt in your head will convince you to quit everything if you let it. It is really easy to get down on yourself for missing a workout (or literally anything else). Negative self talk however, is a trap. It kills your motivation, which usually makes you even harder on yourself in the long run. Give yourself grace, listen to your body, and be patient with yourself when making the choices that are best for you.

Unfortunately, there are no “quick fixes” when it comes to fitness — and I would caution you to be weary about buying into any products or packages promising you one. Holistic wellness takes conscious habit-forming and a lot of consistency. Motivation is key to staying on track. Everyone struggles with motivation at times. Remember to be kind to yourself and listen to your body. Make the right choices for you and the motivation will come naturally.

Thursday July 15, 2021 we will have another evening workout + happy hour. Join us on Facebook at 7:00 pm for a cardio workout, with a cocktail hour immediately to follow via Zoom call. 21+ only.

Team Cardio Outside

For our July outdoor workout, we would like to take the Team on a hike! Saturday July 24, 2021 meet us and the Team on a local trail (location tbd)! We’ll spend the morning on some light cardio and Team bonding. Hope to see you there!
