The Season of Thanks: Showing gratitude for your body this Thanksgiving

TDB Fitness Newsletter 11/21/2021

For those who celebrate Thanksgiving here in the States, we see it as a time to express gratitude, catch up with loved ones, and eat lots of food. An unfortunate side product of these cherished traditions, however, is the diet culture shame we bring with us to Thanksgiving Dinner.

Tip of the week:

Giving Thanks for Your Body

“Calories don’t count on Thanksgiving.”

“The diet starts on New Years.”

“It’s cheat day!”

Does any of this sound familiar? Toxic diet culture becomes shockingly transparent around the holidays. Occasions centered on food tend to bring out the anxieties we carry around as a product of that culture. These seemingly harmless statements actually indicate the ways we use shame to restrict ourselves – hoping it will result in bodies society deems “fit.”

Remember, humans don’t like to deprive themselves. Being “fit” actually means much more than looking a certain way. And those shaming statements are really just another version of negative self-talk; which we know actually makes it less likely you’ll achieve your goals. So how do we celebrate and feast together this year without bringing diet culture to dinner with us?

This year I challenge you to lean into the theme of “gratitude” in regards to your body instead. How revolutionary would it be if we lived in a world where we focused on the ways having bodies like ours have benefitted us rather than how they look? Where have your legs taken you? What beauty have your eyes seen? How have your senses of taste and smell enriched your memories? Honestly, we’re all very lucky to be alive and have each other. And we’re most likely still going to overeat, regardless of whether we do it in shame or not. So why not give yourself a break this year and choose gratitude instead?

Got Tea?

Renea’s a really good person to talk to — it’s part of what made her an effective middle school teacher. She’s good at listening, asking pointed questions, and giving gentle feedback.

Have something you need to get off your chest? You now have the opportunity to Spill the Tea With Renea… We’re in the process of designing an official members only space of our website to facilitate processes like these. Until then, DM her on Facebook if you ever want to chat!
